WEEK BEGINNING JUNE 15th
A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOE THIS WEEK, HAVE A LOVELY DAY!
As this is the week we get our Summer Holidays, I will not be posting work this week. On a personal note, I would like to thank you all for the amazing support you gave to your child's learning during these unusual times. They are a wonderful group of children and I know they will do so well in Senior Infants. I will look forward to popping my head around the door to see them in their new class next year. They were a joy to teach and I'm sure they will do so well going forward. Wishing you all a lovely Summer and hopefully the sun will keep shining!
I will see you at our Teddy Bear's Picnic zoom on Tuesday.
Best Wishes
Mrs. Flanagan

Week beginning June 8th
Hello everyone! We hope you all had a lovely weekend. We are continuing on with our relaxed work load. The children have worked so hard, so we are going to turn our focus away from textbook work and more towards creative activities. If you still wish to continue with odds and ends in the books with your children, please do. Please continue with the reading accessing oxford reading owl as before and we suggest you try to keep in touch with the letter sounds every so often. This is a weekly menu of ideas for you to dip in and out of as you please. There are a lot of links so please just choose a few that suit.
Over the month of June, we would encourage your children to have a little contact with buddies, a phone call, a skype, a zoom, a whats app video, a phone call or even letter writing!

Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely long weekend. As we are now in the month of June, we think it is time to relax things a little. Week beginning May 25th
Hello everyone, I hope you all had a superweekend? Here is the work for this week, do what you can, it’s all about keeping your child in touch with their learning and holding some kind of routine in the day. If you have any queries or your child wants to say hi or send a picture, I am available at powerstownnsdf@gmail.com
Maths: This week the children will continue learning to recognise 1c, 2c and 5c coins and understand their value. (you will need to source 1 cent, 2 cent and 5 cent coins)
Busy at Maths Big Book page 118. Colour the correct number of coins to match the price tag. It is important that the children use the physical money if they can to help them understand the concept of combining in order to create the correct amount.
Reading: If you feel that your child still needs to continue with our Folens Readers online choosing from Little Zack, Look out Kitty, Teddy is lost then please do so otherwise please access some other readers (namely ‘Biff and Chip’ readers) on oxfordowl.co.uk to help keep your child exposed to and engaging with reading.
Phonics: Simple Dictation (have groups 1 s,a,t,I,p,n 2 c,k,e,h,r,m,d 3 g,o,u,l,f,b and group 4 ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or laid out on the table as an aid)
goat sail pie
Revise Tricky words to date – if all tricky words could be written on a small piece of paper just as our letters and words from our readers are this would be great. The children could then turn them upside down and play a game in which they pick a word, identify it and put it in a sentence. If there is a word your child is struggling with maybe you could write it in big font and stick it to your fridge or an area they would see it regularly. Exposure to the word will help the child learn it.
Gaeilge: Siopadóireacht Bua na Cainte Ceacht 5 (Monday and Tuesday)/or Folensonline.ie Abair liom ‘Siopadóireacht’
Alternatively you could try your best to work through the following PowerPoints. They are very self explanatory – they use pictures to explain everything.
www.powerstownns.com/userfiles/Bréagáin Dot to Dot Worksheet Gaeilge(1).pdf
www.powerstownns.com/userfiles/What Did Aoife Buy PowerPoint (1).ppt
Religion: www.growinlove.ie Theme 8: Water Lesson 1. This can be completed over the week as there is lots of content on this page. There is a lot you can discuss with your child on this topic. Water is all around us and used for a lot of things. Please complete Grow in love book page 46 and 47 (you can look at the ebook to the right on the page and chat if you do not have the book
Tuesday May 19th
Maths
Just like last week, the children could set up a little shop in their play space, they could put price tags on their toys, price tags showing 1 cent up to 5 cent. The children could play shop, choose an item in the shop, look at the price and choose the correct coin for their toy.
Busy at Maths Big Book page 119. The children have to count and write how much money is in each group and then add them together. Like I have already suggested using real coins will be very beneficial for this lesson.
Reading: Continue with our Folens Readers online choosing from Little Zack, Look out Kitty, Teddy is lost and oxfordowl.co.uk
Phonics: Simple Dictation (have groups 1 s,a,t,I,p,n 2 c,k,e,h,r,m,d 3 g,o,u,l,f,b and group 4 ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or laid out on the table as an aid)

SPHE: Here is a link to a yoga activity which would be very beneficial for the children as it will allow them to slow down and breath.
www.powerstownns.com/userfiles/Yoga Poses.ppt
Storytime:
Owl babies - https://vimeo.com/55971653 or you can have a look back at my video. As a way of developing some oral language skills you could ask your child to draw a picture of the story and to explain the story or part of the story in their own words.
Wednesday May 20th
Maths: For their shop at home, you could have different price tags 1 cent to 10cents …. you could now give your child a variety of 1 cent, 2 cent and 5 cent coins and they have to put together the correct coins for the price tag to shop. This will take time and your child may take a while to get, so plenty of learning through play
For todays lesson I would encourage constant repetition of combing the coins to make different values. The use of the shop setting would be very helpful, fun and engaging for the children.

Writing; the children could begin to write some news. If a page was lined half way down so that they could draw a picture on top. It is important that the children start in close to the left hand side of the page and on the top line. They can be encouraged to leave a finger space between words and to add a full stop at the end of each line. The children will need to copy the writing so I advise you to write it in large print which is sitting on a line. The children could dictate the news with you. It could be about their week or the weekend to come. Here is an example: (the simpler the better)
Today is Friday.
It is very windy outside.
I drew a barn owl.
I played on my bike.

Maths: This week the children will be learning to recognise 1c, 2c and 5c coins. (you will need to source 1 cent, 2 cent and 5 cent coins)
The children can take each of these coins, place a page over it and do a crayon rubbing of the coin, reinforcing their recognition of the coins, size, shape and the number on the coin showing the value of the coin. To reinforce their understanding of the value of the coin, your child can draw the number of dots beside the coin, 1 cent will get 1 dot, 2 cent will get 2 dots, 5 cent will get 5 dots…… so they won’t think always ‘1 coin = 1 cent
Busy at Maths Big Book page 113 (take top half first) match I cent coins to 1 cent coin in the centre
(Bottom half) match 2 cent coins to 2 cent coins in the centre
Reading: Continue with our Folens Readers online choosing from Little Zack, Look out Kitty, Teddy is lost.

Maths: Busy at Maths Big Book page 115, children have to work out how much is in each money box. To do this, we need to revisit the idea of keeping an eye on the value of the coin, watching the number on the coin. To make this activity easier for your child, they could draw dots beside each coin to understand and see the value, then count the number of dots altogether, not falling into the trap of just counting the coins and not checking their value.
For their shop at home, you could have different price tags 1 cent, 2 cent, 3 cent, 4 cent, 5 cent 6 cent7 cent 8 cent…. you could now give your child a variety of 1 cent, 2 cent and 5 cent coins and they have to put together the correct coins for the price tag to shop. Week beginning Monday April 27th
Hi Everybody,
I hope that you all got on good last week with all your activities and that everyone is keeping well. I would like to thank you all for your efforts so far in keeping all our little stars on track and up to date as much as possible. This is a very difficult time and any work that the kids can get done during the week is a bonus so please don’t feel under pressure to complete everything, just try your best.
This week’s work is in line with what I circulated last week so the same guidelines apply – try let the children complete the writing activities independently and when you have time you can help them access some online content. As I said last week if you have a spare blank or project copy it would be great for the children to do their little extra non book activities in that, if not no worries!
I would like to wish a big happy birthday this week to Grace. I hope you have a fantastic day !!
Monday
Phonics Take group 6 letters y, x, ch, sh, th, th – make the sound, copy and write the sound, dictation call out the sound and your child can copy and write the sound or write without looking at the sound
Reading Continue reading and becoming familiar with Finn Jumps In. You can then challenge the children by calling out a word from the page and ask the child to point it out or alternatively point to a word and ask the child what it is or to put that word into a sentence. This can also be competed using our past readers.
Maths Busy at Maths Big Book page 106 Days of the week - the children may keep a little journal similar to the one in the book – each day they could write the word in their copy or on a sheet and draw a picture which shows something from their day, at the end of the week the children can look back and talk about what they did on a given day.
SESE all about cats – below are links to information pages on a number of different types of cats.

Tuesday
Morning everybody, If you take a look at the news page on our website you will see there there is a letter to parents and children from our Board of Management.
Regards,
Deirdre Flanagan
Phonics Dictation – now that we have covered all the sounds you can begin to dictate short 3 letter words such as ‘sit’ or ‘lap’. The children can write the word. This can be challenging so break the sounds up and encourage the child to say the sound themselves.
Tricky words – group 2. These words are new to the children so just keep showing the words to the children and saying and using them in sentences. Encourage the children to make sentences using them also. Complete 2 each day. Todays words – are all

Religion We never had a chance to look at the theme of Easter in our work to date so it would be great if we could look back at this theme. The first part to deal with is ‘The last supper’. The children can complete pages 36 and 37 in their work book( if they have the book - I'm not sure did I pack it on our closure day) and /or you can access online content on Grow in Love online to help work through this theme. It would be great if you could help to explain the concept of the last supper.
Friday
Good morning Juniors, happy Friday! You are all doing just super! First day of Summer today, we will be doing all about Summer over the next few weeks. You could make a little May Altar for Mary, today is Mary's special day, pop out to the garden and pick some lovely flowers and pop them in a vase, say a little Hail Mary. As it is a Bank Holiday this weekend, I will be back on Tuesday, so you all get a well deserved rest!

Hi Everybody,
I hope you are all doing well and finding the work and learning activities ok, to help things along, I am setting up a temporary email address. This will give parents an opportunity to contact me if you have any queries or maybe for my jolly juniors to take a picture of their great work or to send me a picture of fun things they have been up to! Please remember, there is no pressure to have everything done for when we return, we are here to support your child's learning and hopefully homeschooling is a postive experience for our wonderful juniors.

Hi all,
To help keep on top of all the sounds and letters that we did in school 'Jolly Phonics' - (the programme we use to teach the sounds in school) is available as an app on your phone or tablet. It's a brillaint resource and includes familiar games which the children completed when they were at school and it goes through all the sounds and blending. its definitely worth a download.
Kind regards,
Deirdre Flanagan

Week beginning Monday April 20th
Hi Everybody,
I hope you all had a super Easter break and the Easter bunny delivered all the lovely eggs! He left a little message for me and told me you are all being so good at home! Well done everybody, I am so proud of you!
This is the work layout for this week, do your best and see how it goes, no pressure! I know parents are busy so I don’t want to overload during what is already tricky times. If your child struggles with a task, keep it at their pace. If home is chaotic that day ,just do the written tasks to let them work away independently while you get something done and do the online work/parent led activities when you have access to a laptop and have time and not stressed!
If you have a spare blank or project copy it would be great for the children to do their little extra non book activities in that, if not no worries!

Hi again everybody, we hope you are all keeping well and all is good at home. Here is an outline of the work for this week. For anybody who does not have their books, the cjfallon and folens websites are open to parents to access the textbooks. To keep up with the Gaeilge, Edco have now opened bua na cainte to Parents, username is ‘trial’ and password ‘trial’ at www.edco.ie/bua.. The children could open ‘Ócáidí speisialta – An Cháisc’ for this week and enjoy.
This month for SESE we were due to do a lot of work on the garden and the gardener, do get out gardening with Mammy or Daddy and have little chats as you do little jobs. A lot of learning can be done as you chat and work! Look up Eric Carle ‘The Tiny seed’ on youtube (with adult supervision please) if time and resources allow plant some cress/flower seeds and keep a picture diary of their growth. Go out to the garden with a little notebook, draw pictures of flowers/trees you see. Do bark/leaf rubbings and press some flowers in a book. Get your imagination going and design and draw a dream garden that you would love! Using playdough, make some flowers, trees, garden insects…For Art paint a beautiful flower (show the children Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’. Do a little treasure hunt around the garden …hide and find the teddies….weather permitting! Have a little garden picnic, face time Granny or Grandad from the garden!
For our fitness dudes, do look up Joe wicks daily workout for Kids, and don’t forget our ‘get ready, get set, go ‘ athletics… we could get Mammy and Daddy very fit too!
A big happy birthday to Freddie, hope you have a great day Freddie! A big happy birthday to Lexi later in the week, hope you have a super day!

Dear Parents and children,
We hope you and your families are keeping well during these trying times. It can be difficult to find resources which can help you teach your child at home so below we are providing you with a list of links to websites which we think would be useful for you and your children. They can be accessed on a laptop, tablet or phone and most of them for junior infants are fun interactive games.
One of the most useful sites which we as teachers obtain most of our resources from is called Twinkl.ie. This website has thousands of resources which are designed specifically for the Irish primary school classroom and the Irish curriculum. The resources are broken up into subject areas and age groups so it should be easy to find different resources for phonics, maths and all other subject areas. Twinkl.ie have kindly provided a free months membership to all parents in the wake of Covid-19.
Twinkl.ie: Setting this up is really easy to do - go to www.twinkl.ie/offer and enter the code IRLTWINKLHELPS along with your log in details. This will be the most useful website as it covers all the subject areas in one place.
Some other useful sites include:
Phonics: https://www.abcya.com/ https://www.topmarks.co.uk/english-games/5-7-years/letters-and-sounds
Maths: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/kids-activities/fun-maths-games-and-activities/ https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/counting
Art: www.mrsbrown.art/drive
Mash.ie: Work that can be accessed and downloaded for free from a website called Mash.ie which has a huge number of resources created by primary school teachers all over the country (some of these resources are free but some you have to pay for - but it would be worth a look).
The following is a link to a free pack of work packed with different resources - http://mash.ie/product/parent-pack-covidhometeach.
PE: https://family.gonoodle.com/ (Go noodle is a great resource with a huge number of vidoes which your child can move along to. This is particularly useful if the weather is bad and you want to get your child moving)
We will post some other useful resources over the coming days. Please make as much use of these resources as you please. Every little helps during these times.
We would finally ask that you all continue to work through the homework provided in their workbooks as this is some of the content which we intended to cover in school. A lot of the resources mentioned above - in particular Twinkl will help you to teach the different concepts.
Look after yourselves and stay safe,
The Junior Infant Teachers.
