Book Lists 2020

Hi All.

I hope you and your extended families are safe and well.

The Government Roadmap for Reopening schools, originally due for release on 20th June, was eventually released on Monday 27th July.

Not unexpectedly, it has caused a review of the class allocations for the coming school year in Powerstown NS.

By Wednesday, the Board of Management had approved an amended school organisation, which eliminates any multi-grade classes and best provides for social distancing and a full return to school for all pupils.

The Book Lists have now been amended by the teachers to take account of the class allocations and are attached below.

We are conscious of the costs associated with the return to school, especially burdensome for those who may have had reduced income for the past few months. Please note the following:

Book Rental: As full use was not made of books last year, all Book Rental will be free of charge for this school year. Rental books, which were retained for the Summer must be returned in the first 3 days of September. Failure to return books promptly will result in delays to the successful operation of this scheme. Any books not returned must be paid for in full, according to the rules of the Rental Scheme.

School Requisites: There was a saving on school requisites last year as the school was closed from March. We are reducing the school requisites by €15 per child as outlined below.

*1st Child = €30       2nd Child = €25       3rd & Subsequent Child/Children = €20 per child
For example if you have 1 child in the school Requisites will be €30 – a saving of €15
If you have 2 children in the school Requisites will be €55 – a saving of €30.
If you have 3 children in the school Requisites will be €75 – a saving of €45.
If you have 4 children in the school Requisites will be €95 – a saving of €60.

Pupil Personal Insurance: We strongly recommend participation in this scheme. Cost is €9 per pupil for 24 hour cover. This covers the cost of medical expenses, not recoverable from another source.

Homework Journal: In use from 1st – 6th and costing €4 per pupil.

My Learner ID: This programme is being ordered by the school direct from the publishers. Cost is €11 for pupils from 3rd – 6th. The aim of the programme is for learners to learn ‘how to learn’ and to become, and be, learners.

Purchase of Books & Stationery

Before the school shut down for the Summer Vacation, I spoke with Ruth Healy Lucey, former secretary of the Parents’ Council. We have agreed the following:

For parents wishing to order school books locally, Marian's Bookshop is offering a service that will allow parents to email them their book lists and then collect their order from Powerstown School Hall at an allocated time, the week before returning to school. For parents of Powerstown N.S. students, they are offering a 10% discount on books and stationery and parents get to avoid queuing down the street in town!

To avail of this service parents are asked to take a photo of their book list(s) and email to the dedicated email address:

mariansbookspowerstown@gmail.com

Parents are asked to please provide the following information in their email:

·         Name and mobile phone number.

·         Children's names, their class and teacher's name (book lists are the same in any case).

·         Clearly indicate which items of stationery are required from the list (we understand some parents might have some left over from last year!!)

·         Parents will receive a confirmation email to indicate that their order has been received.

·         Marian's will process their order and parents will be contacted and given a day and time slot for collection from the school hall.  This is to ensure an efficient service that complies with social distancing requirements.

·         Parents are requested to pay by card only.  Payment can be made over the phone in advance of the collection day by contacting the shop on 052 6123813.  Alternatively, payment can be made in the school hall where a card payment service will be available.

Please note that orders must be placed before 5pm on Friday 7th August.  Orders received after this date may not be completed in advance of children's return to school.

This service was advance agreed due to the delay in releasing Book Lists from Powerstown NS, necessitated by Covid 19 and the Department of Education’s failure to recognise the validity of the school’s appeal against the loss of a class teacher. However, parents may choose to buy their books at whatever venue, locally or otherwise that they wish.

Commencement of the School Year

The incoming Junior Infants will commence school on Monday 31st August.

All other classes, Senior Infants – 6th will commence on Tuesday 1st September.

Further details regarding start back will issue closer to the return. Your patience is appreciated.

If there are queries in relation to this e-mail, please e-mail to the school at powerstownns@gmail.com. Mrs. Roche will only start to address these upon her return to work from 12th August.

Wishing you continued safety in these changing times and again, thank you for your patience, which I believe has been rewarded with a better class organisation and associated booklists.

Regards, Eugene Fogarty
